The BBC has yet to confirm the news. However, given the show's popularity and the fact that the premiere drew in a whopping 2.7 million viewers, it's very possible that the broadcaster will be making an announcement regarding its return in the coming weeks.

Viewers have been loving the drama so far and have taken to Twitter to praise the show. One person hailed the series as "the best thing on TV right now," while another called it "fresh, gritty and gripping".

What is Blue Lights about?

For those unfamiliar with the series, it stars Sian Brooke as Grace, a mum in her 40s, who decides to take a gamble by leaving her stable job as a social worker to join the Police Service. Just weeks into the job, she's making so many mistakes that she wonders if she's made the right decision. Together with her fellow rookies, Annie (Katherine Devlin) and Tommy (Nathan Braniff), she attempts to navigate the unique pressures and challenges that come with policing in Belfast.

John Lynch also stars in the series as crime boss James McIntyre, alongside Martin McCann, who plays Stevie Neil, Valene Kane as Angela Mackle and Desmond Eastwood as DS Murray Canning.

Nathan Braniff, Richard Dormer and Andi Osho round off the cast as Tommy Foster, Gerry Cliff and Sandra Cliff.
