Mike began coaching after his playing career was suddenly cut short. Additionally, he couldn’t give up the game because of his intense affection for it. From 1979 to 1980, he held his first coaching position at the University of Missouri.
He was a part-time defensive assistant there. Following that, he worked in a variety of coaching positions for eight years at Weber State College.
He then served as the defensive back and defensive coordinator for the Washington State Cougars from 1989 to 1993. Thus, in 1994, with the Dallas Cowboys, he got his first shot at the NFL after 14 years of hard work in college football.
He continued working for the club until 2006. Most notably, during his 12-year tenure in Dallas, Mike won Super Bowl XXX in 1995. The native of Illinois began playing for the Atlanta Falcons in 2007 before going to the Cincinnati Bengals.
In addition, he worked with the Bengals from 2008 to 2013 as their defensive coordinator. He then became the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings.
He has since led his team to two NFC North titles in 2015 and 2017. The professional football coach continued to work with the Vikings in 2018.
He also became the fourth Minnesota Vikings head coach in franchise history to record 40 wins. Similar to how he did in 2019, he passed 52 franchise wins to become the third coach. Later, this coach signed a three-year (through 2023) contract extension with the Vikings in July 2020.
