Shows Like When Calls the Heart
The season 6 finale of When Calls The Heart is set to air this Sunday, June 2, and it's bound to be bittersweet, to say the least. As much as Hearties are looking forward to watching the final episode, we're simultaneously mourning the end of yet another visit to Hope Valley. (Oh, and we're still not over Abigail Stanton's unexpected exit, either.)
Luckily, the show has been renewed for yet another season, and we've always got the annual Christmas special to look forward to come December. But in the meantime, we're going to need something to watch on Sunday nights.
That's why we've put together this list of shows similar to WCTH that might just help you cope. While nothing can take the place of our favorite Hallmark franchise, these are a pretty close second. Take a look:
Lark Rise to Candleford
Lark Rise to Candleford will transport you to a small town in the English countryside circa the late 1800s. Though it first aired back in 2008 (and in 2009 here in the States), the show feels almost like When Calls the Heart's British sister. Gorgeous period costumes, heart-wrenching romances, and a community not unlike that of Hope Valley make this series an obvious choice.
Little Women on PBS
Little Women is PBS's three-part 2018 adaptation of the universally-beloved novel by Louisa May Alcott. A coming-of-age story that takes place during the Civil War, this gift of a series follows the daily lives of Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy March and their mother Marmee as they cope with their father's temporary absence due to the war. It's not quite long enough to tide you over until When Calls the Heart starts up again, but what it lacks in duration, it more than makes up for in quality.
Anne with an E
Travel to Green Gables in Anne with an E, a stunning Netflix series based on the 1985 Anne of Green Gables books. With two seasons available to stream and a third in the works, there's plenty here to keep you entertained during When Calls the Heart's hiatus. And while the plot revolves around the young, red-headed orphan we know and love from the books, the story's been updated to keep grown-ups entertained too.
Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman
"I'm not a lady. I'm a doctor," is just one of many memorable lines spoken by Dr. Michaela Quinn (Jane Seymour), the title character of this fan-favorite show. Set just after the Civil War, the story follows the sophisticated Dr. Quinn, originally from Boston, as she journeys to open a medical practice in the Wild West. Though it premiered in 1993 and concluded its run in 1998, the show doesn't feel dated at all. In fact, if anything, it's remarkable how well the empowering storyline has aged.
Land Girls
Though it's comprised of just 15 episodes, Land Girls developed an avid fanbase during the two years it aired on BBC. World War II rages in the background as four girls journey far from home to aid in the war effort, learning the true meaning of love, duty, and loyalty along the way. An inspiring look into world-altering historical events, this is one show that'll require you to have tissues close at hand.
Heartland
A young woman realizes she shares her late mother's uncanny strengths for "looking at a horse and knowing exactly what to do." At her family's ranch in the Rocky Mountains, she learns to cope with tragedy, make sense of her new life, and use those horse-whispering skills for good. Though the period costumes are absent here, we think you'll find the show's heartwarming central themes to be wonderfully similar to those of When Calls the Heart.
